BATH

A nine-run second inning was more than enough as the Morse High School softball team rolled to a 16-4 Class B South preliminary win over Maranacook on Tuesday.

The seventh-seeded Shipbuilders (13-4) head to No. 2 Oak Hill for Thursday’s quarterfinal, while No. 10 Maranacook finished its season with a 10-7 record.

Sierra Wallace had three hits, including a double, with three RBIs to power Morse, while Mikayla Rose also singled twice and doubled. Olivia Potter launched a triple, singled and drove in a pair of runs, Micailah Albertson singled and picked up an RBI, and Hope Faulkingham ended the game in the fifth with a three-run home run. Also, Dory Kulis homered, Marissa Park and Maddie Mitchell singled and had two RBIs apiece, with Paige Faulkingham singling.

Kulis earned the mound win, allowing four runs on five hits, three walks and two hit batters. She also struck out four.

Black Bears pitcher Paige Costa had two strikeouts and one walk, but allowed 15 Shipbuilder hits.

MT. ARARAT 2

Gabi McGuire’s RBI single in the eighth inning lifted ninth-seeded Cony (9-8) to a Class A North prelim win at Topsham over No. 8 Mt. Ararat, which finished its season with a 10-7 record.

Alexis Couverette reached base in the eighth and eventually scored the winning run.

Cony pitcher Cari Hopkins struck out four, walked one and allowed eight hits for the mound win.

Mt. Ararat claimed a 2-1 lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Kate Guerin and Kelsey Scannevin each had two hits, while Alana Weaver permitted seven hits, walked two and struck out two.

Cony tied the game in the sixth. The Rams face top-seeded Skowhegan on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Baseball

BATH — Mountain Valley capitalized on its opportunities in a 3-1 victory over No. 7 Morse in the teams’ Class B South preliminary contest on Tuesday on Kelley Field.

Tenth-seeded Mountain Valley (12-5) scored in the top of the first inning and twice more in the top of the third.

The Falcons plated the first run of the game in the top of the first. Morse (11-6) tied the game at one in the bottom of the first on a Taylor Shaw RBI single.

John Pepin earned the save after he got himself into — and out of — a jam to start the seventh. The Shipbuilders loaded the bases with no outs, but Pepin was able to shut the door. He struck out two straight batters and a groundout ended the threat and the ballgame.

Hunter Ames recorded the victory, going five innings while striking out five for his sixth win of the year.

Mountain Valley visits No. 2 York for a preliminary contest on Thursday.

Girls lacrosse

WINDHAM — Secondseeded Windham jumped out to a 10-3 halftime lead and rolled to a Class A North 16-5 victory over No. 7 Brunswick.

The Eagles (11-2) host No. 3 Lewiston on Thursday, while the Dragons (5-8) saw their season end for the second straight year at Windham.

Jenna Brooks had three goals in the loss, with Anna Davis adding a pair of tallies. Colleen McKearney, Emily Coffin, Rian Sachs and Dina Murphy picked up an assist each, while netminder Mikaela Aschbrenner turned away nine shots.

Holly Spencer paced Windham with four goals and four helpers, with Belle Skvorak adding a hat trick and one assists.
