Tomas Nido provided all the run support Binghamton (17-10) needed with an RBI single in the eighth inning as the Rumble Ponies beat the Portland Sea Dogs (15-11), 2-0 in the Eastern League series opener on Monday night at Hadlock Field.

With the game scoreless in the top of the ninth, Dale Burdick drew a lead-off walk from Austin Maddox (L, 0-1). After Champ Stuart bunted Burdick to second and Luis Guillorme singled, Nido provided the game-winning hit for Binghamton. Kevin Taylor provided insurance later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Guillorme.

Corey Oswalt was excellent in the start for Binghamton. Oswalt went seven scoreless and allowed four hits while walking three and striking out four. Oswalt lowered his ERA to 2.04 on the season.

Kevin McAvoy was just as good and worked one of the best starts of the year by a Sea Dogs’ starting pitcher. McAvoy threw a season-high seven shutout innings and allowed just two hits while walking one and tying a season high with six strikeouts. McAvoy faced just one batter over the minimum thanks to two double plays and threw 78 pitches.
