Brett Kujala scored six goals and Peter Mumford made 18 saves to lead the Bowdoin College men’s lacrosse team to a 19-15 victory over Tufts on Wednesday evening to conclude the regular season.
The 19th-ranked Polar Bears (10-5, 7-3 NESCAC) defeated the Jumbos for the first time since 2009 and secured the fourth seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament. Ninth-ranked Tufts lost its fourth consecutive contest and dropped to 11-4 (6-4 NESCAC), earning the fifth seed in the conference tournament.
The two teams will play each other again on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Tournament at Bowdoin. Game time will be announced later today.
A high-scoring affair saw the teams combine for a dozen goals in an up-and- down first quarter. The Jumbos got a pair of early goals from Andrew Seiter to build a 5-3 lead, only to see Jimmy Young spark a 4-0 run to close the period for Bowdoin, giving the hosts a 7-5 advantage after 15 minutes.
Bowdoin scored the first two goals of the second quarter, extending its lead to 9-5, but Tufts ended the half on a 3-1 run, featuring a pair of Michael Mattson goals, to cut the lead to 10-8 at intermission.
Tufts evened the score with consecutive goals from Frank Hattler and Nick Katz to start the second half. Kujala took over from there, scoring five goals over the final 23:28 of game time, keying a crucial 5-1 run with a trio of goals that regained the lead for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin carried a 15-12 advantage into the fourth quarter, but Tufts rallied to cut the edge to 16-15 following a Zach Richman goal with 8:16 to play. Kujala answered again for Bowdoin, notching back-to-back goals in a span of 2:23 to push the cushion back to three goals, 18-15, with 5:32 to play.
In addition to his six goals, Kujala also added an assist, while Matthew Crowell had four goals. Tufts was led by three goals and an assist from Mattson, while Hattler had two goals and two assists.
Women’s lacrosse
A furious rally came up just short on Wednesday night as Bowdoin lost its regular season finale at Tufts, 13-12.
With the loss, the Polar Bears (10-5, 5-5 NESCAC) fell to the seventh seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament and will travel to play at Hamilton at noon on Saturday in the NESCAC quarterfinals.
After Mettler Growney scored the game’s first goal for Bowdoin, Tufts rolled off a 7-0 run, getting two goals in the run from Megan Toner to take a 7-1 lead late in the period.
Bowdoin clawed back into the contest with a 4-2 surge to end the half, capped by a pair of Allison Williams goals to make it 9-5 at the break.
The Jumbos appeared to put the game out of reach with two scores to open the second half, extending their lead to 11-5 with 26:50 to go. Hannah Hirschfeld began Bowdoin’s rally and Allison Williams scored five times in a 7-1 run that closed the gap to just 13-12 with 19 seconds left in the game.
Bowdoin won the ensuing draw control but failed to get a shot off as a turnover gave the ball back to Tufts who ran out the clock.
Kayli Weiss made five saves for Bowdoin, while Caroline Maxwell had a team-best three caused turnovers.
Baseball
Sam Huston hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Husson to a 6-5 win over Bowdoin on Wednesday evening.
The Polar Bears fell to 12-15, while the Eagles improved to 21-14.
Husson took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off an RBI fielder’s choice.
Bowdoin responded in the second as an Evann Dumont- LaPointe walk with the bases loaded brought in Eric Mah.
The Polar Bears took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Mah drove in Jack Wilhoite with a ground ball. Brandon Lopez later tagged a double to left-center field that allowed Mah to score.
The Eagles evened the game in the bottom of the inning. Husson’s first tally came on a wild pitch, and the second came from a base hit by Alex Chapman.
Both teams scored in the sixth, extending the tie to 4-4. Chapman and Lopez each tagged an RBI single.
Bowdoin took its final lead of the night in the top of the ninth. Again, Mah drove in a run as he singled to the pitcher and allowed Sean Mullaney to score.
Lopez went 3-for-4 at the plate. Lopez and Mah both recorded two RBIs.
Bowdoin hosts Colby on Friday afternoon in a 3 p.m. NESCAC matchup.
Men’s tennis
The No. 28 nationally ranked Bates kept its postseason hopes alive with a 7-2 victory over No. 4 Bowdoin Wednesday at Lewiston, claiming the first five points to clinch the match early on against the defending NCAA champions.
Bowdoin (14-3, 5-2 NESCAC) suffered its largest margin of defeat of the season of the season
Gil Roddy and Justin Patel won a singles match each for the Polar Bears, who host Tufts on Saturday at 3 p.m.
