WOOLWICH — Stephen Russell Rogers, 76, went home to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 1, 2017.

Steve was born in Bath on August 14, 1940 to Harold Morse and Mildred Vern (Harrington) Rogers.

On June 1977, Steve married Sharon Louise Maker. After graduating from Morse High School in 1959 he went to work at Bath Iron Works, starting in 1960 as a Tinsmith and retiring in 1995 as a Senior Test Supervisor, testing all shipyard locks and keys. When BIW went on Strike for a year, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from December 28, 1961 to December 28, 1965. While serving on the USS Douglas, he was off the coast of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After his discharge from the Navy he returned home and went back to work at BIW where he held several positions over the next thirty-eight years. In 1985, BIW sent Steve to Chicago to work on building a training ship for the U.S. Navy and in 1991 he was sent to St. Johns, NB, Canada as a consultant for the Navy. In 1995 he started Steve’s Maintenance. Then in 1998 he built his own sawmill where his father’s old sawmill originally was. Due to health he sold the sawmill in 2003 and started selling outdoor wood furnaces for Aqua Therm then Heatmore, retiring in 2007.

Steve and Sharon enjoyed traveling and in 1995 they took both their Mom’s and Sharon’s sister Harlinda on a road trip to Pennsylvania.

Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with the Cub Scouts and Little League. He had a love for trains and with Sharon’s help he set up an elaborate rail system in the basement of their home that included a route through Bath, Woolwich and Wiscasset. The set up included replicas of former business and villages along the route that he and Sharon built. He was in the process of writing a book about his life, after being diagnosed with MDS.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Woolwich, his son, Sidney Russell Rogers of Phippsburg, two sister-in-laws, Harlinda Maker of Woolwich and Donna Clark and her husband Bernard of NC, an aunt, Marjorie Hawkes of North Bath, stepsisters, stepbrothers and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father and mother, an infant brother, David and his stepfather.

A viewing will be held from 11 AM to 12 PM on Friday, April 21, 2017 at the Wiscasset Church of the Nazarene, 255 Gardiner Road, Wiscasset with the Funeral service following at 12 Noon. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Phippsburg Sportsmen’s Club, 272 Main Road, Phippsburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sharon Rogers, 117 Dana Mill Road, Woolwich, 04579.
