
She was born September 3, 1922, in Danville, PA, and grew up there. A 1939 graduate of Danville High School, she was a cheerleader, played basketball and made many lifelong friends, and remained loyal to them by returning to the class reunions. She earned a BS at Bloomsburg University, a M.Ed. and CAGS at University of Maine, Orono. She also studied advance research at Syracuse University, NY and the University of Hawaii, Manoa, Oahu.
Hazel married her high school sweetheart, Charles M Guyler, in October, 1943, who was then a B-17 pilot and destined for combat. At that time, she was working in the Pentagon in Washington DC. After completing his missions in England with the 8th Air Force, Charles returned to the US. They enjoyed the military life, moving to many bases and making many friends. They were blessed with the arrival of their beautiful daughter, Sherry Ann, and decided to make a career of the military service, which lasted 24 ? years until they reached Topsham ME, his last assignment. They remained there until Charles unexpected death 9/1991.
Hazel’s professional career was varied. Hazel began as an Elementary School Teacher in the 1950’s, then HS Teacher, then Guidance Counselor. A Certified School Psychologist, she was adjunct Faculty Instructor at UMO, was the Personal Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Bowdoin College, served as an Extension Agent, and taught psychology and counseling at University of Maine in Portland and Farmington.
Wherever they lived, her unfailing dedication to her family, church and community led to volunteering. She was a Girl Scout Leader, served on the Topsham Planning Board for 7 years, was President of Maine Literacy Volunteers, tutored adults in reading and Vietnamese immigrants in English as a Second Language.
Weeks after her husband died, Hazel moved to Port Charlotte, FL where they had chosen to be snowbirds. A devout Christian, she immediately joined the Port Charlotte United Methodist Church, made friends and became active as a Stephen Minister, served on committees. She trained with Hospice and volunteered at Tidewell for more than 10 yrs. She volunteered more than 20 years at Health Plus Thrift Shop (Meals on Wheels)). She was a person who was always ready to meet their needs if she could.
Hazel is survived by her adored daughter, Sherry G Watson of West Bath, ME, 4 adult grandchildren: Dr. Jacqueline D Bouchard, Thomas M Bouchard, Kate McDade Ginn, all of Maine, and John M McDade of CO. She has 8 great grandchildren: Jessica Perkins, Meghan Perkins, Matthew Perkins, Eden Bouchard, Isabella Bouchard, Nora An, William Ginn and Martin McDade., and three great great grandchildren.
Hazel was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years or treasured marriage, and by her parents, two sisters and two brothers, all of PA. At her request, there will be no services and a private interment.
