Federer wallops Murray to sweep ATP round robin

Roger Federer blew away Andy Murray 6-0, 6-1 to finish the ATP Finals round-robin unbeaten and hand Murray his worst defeat in seven years in front of his home crowd in London on Thursday.

Federer equaled Ivan Lendl’s record of 12 semifinal appearances in winning his group ahead of Japanese debutant Kei Nishikori.

In the other group, Novak Djokovic will be guaranteed the year-end No. 1 ranking for the third time in four years if he beats Tomas Berdych on Friday.

Before playing Murray, the second-seeded Federer had already secured a semis berth after Nishikori defeated David Ferrer 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the afternoon. That left Murray needing to defeat the 17-Grand Slam champion in straight sets to make it to the final four at the O2 Arena and thwart Nishikori.

GOLF

PGA: Daniel Berger had five birdies in a seven-hole stretch on his final nine for a share of the lead in the OHL Classic at Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

Making his sixth PGA Tour start, Berger birdied Nos. 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7, and finished with two pars for a 6-under 65 on Mayakoba Resort’s El Camaleon course.

Will MacKenzie, Robert Garrigus, Steve Wheatcroft, Hudson Swafford and Tony Finau also shot 65, and 50-year-old Davis Love III was a stroke back in a group that included Aaron Baddeley, Charley Hoffman and Pat Perez.

LPGA: Christina Kim had two eagles in a 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational at Mexico City.

Kim eagled the par-5 second and 17th holes at tree-lined Club de Golf Mexico, the first-year venue after six seasons in host Lorena Ochoa’s hometown of Guadalajara.

Spain’s Azahara Munoz was second. Third-ranked Lydia Ko birdied the final two holes for a 68.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a 9-under 63 for a one-stroke lead on the opening day of the Turkish Airlines Open.

Jimenez eagled his opening hole and had seven birdies in an 11-hole stretch starting on the fourth. He was one shot off the record at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal course.

England’s Ian Poulter also recorded an eagle and seven birdies, but a bogey left him one shot off the lead.

SOCCER

MLS: Robbie Rogers, the league’s first openly gay player, agreed to a multiyear contract extension with the LA Galaxy. The team did not announce terms of the deal.

FIFA INVESTIGATIONS: Nearly four years after FIFA chose Russia and Qatar to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, the governing body’s ethics judge exonerated the countries of any corruption in their winning bids.

The ruling by German judge Joachim Eckert came despite evidence of improper conduct by eight of the nine bids.

Eckert’s report was denounced by critics as a whitewash and harshly contested by Michael Garcia, the American prosecutor who led the investigation. Garcia said he will appeal Eckert’s decision to close the case.

BOXING

PORTLAND BOXING CLUB: Former world light heavyweight and heavyweight champ Michael Spinks will get the honorary key to the City of Portland from Mayor Michael Brennan at the Portland Regency Hotel on Friday.

Spinks, 58, also was a gold medalist for the U.S. at the 1976 Olympics. He will sign autographs at the Russell Lamour vs. Ahsandi Gibbs fight at the Portland Expo on Saturday night.
