Memorial Day parade

The annual Memorial Day parade, canceled last year because of the pandemic, will roll out at 11 a.m. Monday, May 31 from the corner of Lincoln and South streets and conclude at Eastern Cemetery at Main Street and Johnson Road.

Parade lineup is at 10 a.m. at Village Elementary School. Lincoln Street will be closed from 10-11 a.m. and those who need to access Village School to drop off parade participants or to participate in the parade are asked to use an alternate route.

Walking will be allowed in the parade, according to Town Councilor Ben Hartwell, and CDC COVID-19 guidelines will be followed.

Gorham churches, community organizations, clubs, neighborhood groups, businesses, school groups, sports clubs and anyone else that wants to be part of the Memorial Day parade is invited to register floats or units online at gorham-me.org/recreation-department, where more information is available.

Lions Club news

Ken Aldrich, president of Gorham Lions, has announced the club will award five graduates scholarships of $500 each at the Gorham High School Awards Night on Wednesday, June 2.

On June 26, the Gorham Lions will stage its inaugural craft fair to be held on the lawn at Robie Gym on South Street. All receipts from table rentals are pledged to vision and senior assistance, high school scholarships and the Gorham Food Pantry.

Baxter friends to meet

The Friends of Baxter Memorial Library invite all members to its annual meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 13, on the lawn next to the library at 71 South St. Social distancing and masks are required.

Spring brush drop off

Residents can take brush to Gorham Public Works Department, 80 Huston Road, from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 15.

No drop-offs or stumps from commercial businesses will be accepted. Leaves and grass clippings will be accepted in the designated area throughout the season. For more information, call 892-9062.

Book, bake and plant sale

First Parish Church, 1 Church St., Gorham, will host a sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22.

50 years ago

The Rev. Alan Jones, interim pastor at the First Parish Church, and his wife, Carol, embarked on a trip to Europe and the Holy Land, the American Journal reported on May 13, 1971. The  Women’s Fellowship at the church hosted a bon voyage party.

U.S. taxpayer debt
