Deadline announced for History Camp scholarship

The Old Berwick Historical Society invites current Grade 7 and 8 students who reside in the Marshwood School District to apply for a spot in its free History Summer Camp experience, set for June 21-25.
The camp will be led by Caitlin Bishop.
Three students will be accepted to the program this year due to carpooling constraints. All participants will be required to wear masks as needed. Camp typically runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning and ending at the Counting House Museum.
Application deadline is Friday, and the link is on the home page of the society’s website at oldberwick.org. Applicants will be notified by June 4.

Applications being accepted for Buxton Community Parade

The town of Buxton is accepting registrations to participate in its 2021 Buxton Community Parade, set for 11 a.m Aug. 7.
The parade theme is “Everything Maine.” Entrants can include color guard, band, classic auto, children, floats/flatbeds, walkers, motorcycles, tractor trailers, trucks, classic tractors, large equipment and bicycles. Parade organizers will need to know the approximate number of feet needed to line-up your entry for the parade and if it will include music.
The parade line-up will start at 10 a.m. on Salmon Falls Road and on Depot Street.
Deadline for submitting applications is Aug. 2.

Art workshops at the Maine Art Gallery

The Maine Art Gallery is accepting registrations for two classes it will offer to art students who want to work on their skills.
Adeline Godminc-Tronzo will teach a drawing workshop with painting and collage on June 13. This class will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is limited to eight students. The cost is $60 for members of the Maine Art Gallery; $70 for non-members.
Carolyn Gabbe will lead an exploration of how color is used to paint light and shadow in a three-week class, to meet on successive Mondays beginning July 12. This class will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and is limited to nine students. The cost is $80 for members; $85 for non-members.
The classes will be subject to Maine CDC guidelines; vaccination and masking required.

Elementary teacher Burnell now assistant principal for WJHS

Wells-Ogunquit Community School District superintendent Jim Daly has announced the appointment of Kyle Burnell as assistant principal of Wells Junior High School effective July 1.
Burnell has over 12 years of experience working in public education, most recently serving as a Grade 3 teacher at Wells Elementary School for the past three years. He holds a bachelor of arts degree from Merrimack College and is completing a master’s degree in Educational Leadership through Endicott College and the Maine Educators Consortium. Burnell also has completed an administrative internship with Wells Elementary School Principal April Noble and with Wells Junior High School Principal Josh Gould.
“I am just thrilled to be able to have the opportunity to work here at Wells Junior High School,” said Burnell. “I have been fortunate to teach at the elementary school, having gone to these schools myself. I think this is a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community. These schools have given me so much throughout the course of my life (and so) I appreciate the opportunity to have the chance to impact kids and to impact our community.”
Gould remarked that Burnell’s experience with special education, his strong ability to elevate student behavior and performance, and his deep understanding of effective practices in teaching and learning will help move Wells Junior High School forward.
“Kyle Burnell brings experience as an outstanding classroom teacher and a strong analytical mind to Wells Junior High School, said Gould. “He loves his students and exudes Warrior Pride!”
Burnell was selected unanimously for the position, from a field of three applicants, following a screening and interview process that was conducted by a committee comprised of parents, a school committee member, Wells Junior High School teachers, support staff, and Gould.

First place winners in Wells-Ogunquit CSD writing contest listed

The 35th Annual Literary Achievement Awards writing contest of the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District continued in 2021, despite limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic.
More than 240 kindergarten through Grade 12 students submitted their writings electronically. Following a social distanced judging process, 58 of the students placed in the contest. Their names were announced in late April.
The top prize of $500 went to Wells High School senior Natalie Hanagan for her entry, “Death of a Cat: A Small Account of Departure and Acceptance.”
Other first-place winners included, in kindergarten through Grade 11 respectively, Kellan Burnell , Bradley Martin, Maya Roche, Alex Vaillancourt, Diane Marquis, Deanna Ferris, Saoirse Carrigan, Ainslie Donovan, Pieper Shead, Sam Coleman, Willa Ferris, and Andrew Mott.
Top winners at each grade level (with the exception of Grade 12) received $100, with second place winners receiving $50 each, third place winners receiving $25 each, and honorable mentions receiving $25 gift certificates to Las Olas Taqueria.

Two Maine students named 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars

Two Maine students were among the list of 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars announced by U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona recently, recognizing 161 high school seniors for their accomplishments in academics, the arts and career and technical education fields.
Maine Presidential Scholars are Devon Michael Hunter of Orrington, who attends John Bapst Memorial High School at Veazie, and Aislynn K. Worden, of Springvale, who attends Sanford High School.
