Marshwood High scored seven runs in the fifth inning Thursday and went on to down Deering 14-6 in an SMAA baseball game at Hadlock Field.

Zachary Quintal and Jake Lebel each drove in three runs for the Hawks, who have won three straight after losing their opener.

“This was resilience and a great team win,” Marshwood Coach Bryant Lausberg said. “We fell behind early, but the second time around in the order we began to make some good adjustments and started to go the other way.”

Deering (3-3) scored in the first inning, keyed by a triple by Dominik Bernard.

The Hawks responded with a run in the third and three in the fourth before Deering came back with five in the bottom of the fourth, collecting four hits and taking advantage of sloppy defense for a 6-4 lead.

Kevin Goldberg hit a three-run triple for the Rams in the fourth.

But after that the game belonged to Marshwood.

Lebel knocked in two runs in two at-bats during the seven-run fifth for Marshwood. Lebel, who finished 3 for 5, hit the ball hard in each of his at-bats.

Lebel was retired twice, once on a deep fly to center and then on a hard line drive to the third baseman.

“I kept getting fastballs where I like them, and I was able to put a good swing on the ball,” Lebel said.

“I’ve been working on my swing and keeping my hands up, and when I got my pitch I was able to put it in the gap.”

Quintal, Zachary Hodges, Noah McDaniel, Patrick Fallon, and Luke Stankovich all drove in runs in the fifth, when Marshwood sent 11 batters to the plate and chased Deering starting pitcher James Sinclair from the game.

In addition to offense, Lausberg was pleased with another aspect of his team.

“Sometimes when you get into these long games, whether we’re up or down, it can be really easy for high school kids to lose focus,” Lausberg said. “I think that keeping our focus from the start of the game to the end was big.

“Staying ahead and keeping a good mindset at the plate will be key for us as the season goes on.”

The Hawks added three runs in the sixth to expand their lead to 14-6.

Quintal, Zach Doyon, and Stankovich each scored in the sixth for Marshwood.

Nicholas Landis pitched in relief for the Hawks, throwing 31/3 scoreless innings.

“We’ve just got to keep sticking together and working on the fundamentals,” Lebel said. “We’re playing good baseball right now.”

Marshwood will be looking to win its fourth consecutive game Saturday when it takes on Westbrook.

The Rams will look to get back over .500 with a game Saturday against Bonny Eagle.
