Falmouth student chosen for Senate page program

Lucy Taylor of Falmouth is serving in the U.S. Senate Page Program in Washington, D.C., in the office of Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.

Taylor is a junior at Falmouth High School and an active member of the Falmouth Civil Rights Team. She also volunteers as a High School Reading Buddy, supporting elementary school students. Taylor is a dedicated multi-sport student-athlete and competes nationally as a lacrosse player. She enjoys coaching, mentoring and introducing elementary school girls to the sport that has meant so much to her.

Senate pages must be high school juniors, at least 16 years old and attend school. Senate page duties consist primarily of delivery of correspondence and legislative material within the Capitol complex. Other duties include preparing the chamber for Senate sessions and carrying bills and amendments to the desk. Pages attend classes in the early morning at the United States Senate Page School, a program fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Portland couple honored by St. Brigid School 

The new gym at St. Brigid School in Portland has been named The Craig and Dolly Foster Gymnasium for the couple that donated a major gift to the Catholic school that serves students in pre-K through eighth grade.

The Fosters are residents of Portland, attend the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and currently have two grandchildren attending St. Brigid School.

The gift will allow St. Brigid School to update, renovate and improve the building the gymnasium is housed in and will also allow St. Brigid School to update its athletic and physical education equipment.

“This generous gift will impact our community, students, faculty and facilities for many years to come,” said William Burke, principal of St. Brigid. “We are honored to have Craig and Dolly’s name on our gymnasium.”

Portland student accepted to naval academy

George P. Theall of Portland has accepted an offer to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

“I have been working hard to achieve the honor of going to the U.S. Naval Academy to continue all of my interests in flight and STEM as I explore my future paths within the Navy,” Theall wrote in his letter requesting a nomination from Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, D-Maine.

“I would be honored to serve as an officer in the United States Navy and have the chance to give back to my country.”

Theall is a senior at Portland High School and the son of Linda Braley and George Theall.

To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, applicants must be nominated by an authorized nominating source, which includes members of Congress.

Scholarships available

Graduating seniors from Maine high schools who are members of the National Future Farmers of America organization and interested in pursuing a career in farming, agriculture or natural resources are invited to apply for a $1,000 scholarship through the Maine Community Foundation. The deadline to apply for a Guerrette FFA Scholarship is March 1; see the statewide scholarships section of MaineCF’s website, mainecf.org.

The Merrymeeting chapter of Maine Audubon has scholarships to four UMaine Cooperative Extension 4-H summer camps: Tanglewood in Lincolnville, Blueberry Cove in Tenants Harbor, Bryant Pond in Bryant Pond and Greenland Point in Princeton. The scholarships provide positive outdoor, residential experiences for students ages 8-14. Parents should apply as soon as possible because camp sessions are already filling; the deadline is April 9. The Maine Young Birders Club is seeking teens ages 14-17 to participate in birding programs on Hog Island and Borestone Mountain this summer.
