ASHBURN, Va. — Chase Young is starting Washington Commanders training camp on the physically unable to perform list as he works back from surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.

The team put Young, tight end Logan Thomas and centers Chase Roullier and Tyler Larsen on the PUP list Tuesday after players arrived at the practice facility on the eve of the first practice of camp. Offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas was placed on the non-football injury list with an illness designation.

Young, the 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year, injured the knee during a game in November. After leading rookies with 7½ sacks the previous year, he had just 1½ before his second NFL season was cut short.

Doctors grafted part of the patellar tendon from Young’s left knee to help fix the tear. Coach Ron Rivera has been reticent to define a timeline for Young’s recovery, with the 23-year-old Ohio State product and trainers taking a methodical approach to the rehab process this offseason.

Young was present for some spring workouts even though he hadn’t yet been cleared to practice. It’s not immediately clear how much he’ll be around while continuing to receive treatment, and there’s no guarantee Young will be ready to play in the season opener Sept. 11 against Jacksonville.

BROWNS: Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward and starting right tackle Jack Conklin will begin Cleveland’s training camp on the sideline after being placed on the active/PUP list as the Browns await the NFL’s ruling on quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Ward injured his left foot on the final day of minicamp last month. While tests showed no structural damage, the 25-year-old isn’t ready to practice at full speed.

The fourth overall pick in 2018, Ward signed a five-year, $100.5 million contract extension in May.

Conklin is still rehabbing his right knee and isn’t able to practice. A two-time All-Pro, the 27-year-old Conklin had surgery in December after rupturing his right patellar tendon against Baltimore and missing the final five games last season.

GIANTS: New York Giants leading sacker Azeez Ojulari is going to miss the start of training camp because of a non-football related hamstring injury.

Hours after players started reporting to camp, the team announced Ojulari was put on the reserve/non-football injury list.

The Giants also said wide receiver Sterling Shepard, center Nick Gates and tackle Matt Peart would start the season on the active/physically unable to perform list because of injuries sustained last season.

49ERS: Jimmy Garoppolo reported to training camp for the San Francisco 49ers after spending the offseason away rehabilitating his injured shoulder.

But the message from Coach Kyle Shanahan about Garoppolo’s future and the future of the 49ers was clear: “This is Trey’s team.”

Shanahan started camp by removing any pretense of a quarterback competition in San Francisco by unequivocally stating what had seemed obvious all offseason, that Trey Lance will take over as starter a year after being drafted third overall.

“That’s nothing against Jimmy,” Shanahan said. “We made that decision a year ago and we’re not going to mess around with that anymore. … Jimmy understands that fully. He’s a big guy and it’s nothing against him. It’s a business decision.”

PACKERS: Green Bay agreed to contract extensions with Coach Matt LaFleur, General Manager Brian Gutekunst and Executive Vice President/Director of Football Operations Russ Ball, a person familiar with the deals told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the extensions haven’t been announced. ESPN first reported the extensions. Details haven’t been revealed.

When asked after the Packers’ annual shareholder meeting Monday whether the team had agreed to extensions with LaFleur and Gutekunst, team president/CEO Mark Murphy said he’d prefer to keep those matters “internal.”

CARDINALS: Arizona placed receiver Marquise Brown on the NFL’s active/non-football injury list because of a hamstring issue.

The Cardinals acquired Brown and a third-round pick in a draft-day trade with the Baltimore Ravens back in April. The Ravens received the No. 23 overall pick in return.

BEARS: Star linebacker Roquan Smith and defensive end Robert Quinn showed up on time for the Chicago Bears’ first training camp under general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus.

Whether they’ll choose to participate when practices begin Wednesday remains to be seen.

While most of the attention figures to center on quarterback Justin Fields and his development as he prepares for his second season, the Bears could have a big issue on their hands if two of their best defensive players decide not to practice. Smith and Quinn could opt instead to “hold in” by simply attending meetings while not participating in on-field activities.

Smith wants an extension as he enters the fifth and final season of his rookie deal, while the 32-year-old Quinn’s future with a rebuilding team is unclear.

SEAHAWKS: Seattle released running back Chris Carson with a failed physical designation, potentially signaling an end to his career because of a neck injury.

Carson’s future was in doubt the entire offseason after he was injured in Week 4 last year and eventually underwent neck surgery. Seattle coach Pete Carroll cautioned that Carson may not be able to return and Tuesday’s move finalized the situation.
