Richard Boothby

SCARBOROUGH — Richard R. “Dick” Boothby, 79, a longtime resident of Scarborough, died unexpectedly August 17, 2022, at home with his wife Janice by his side.

Dick was born April 23, 1943 in Portland and was the son of the late Richard E. and Barbara C. (Townsend) Boothby. Dick grew up in Westbrook and graduated Westbrook High School in 1961. He went on to attend both the University of Maine where he studied engineering and the Portland School of Art studying graphic design. He spent the better part of his career performing environmental impact studies for EC Jordan Co. and Devine Tarbell & Assoc., both of Portland.

Not one to remain idle, Dick continued to work part-time after his retirement as a courier for FedEx, Spectrum Healthcare Partners and O’Reilly Auto Parts until his unfortunate passing.

Dick had many passions, one of which was music. He played the guitar and loved every minute on the dance floor where he enjoyed ballroom, swing, and line dancing with his wife Janice.

He loved the outdoors whether it was camping, swimming, boating or gardening. He especially enjoyed fishing on West Grand Lake, Moosehead Lake and Crystal Springs Pond with his son Jon and his many “fishing buddies”.

A day was not complete unless Dick finished the New York Times crossword puzzle, and a game of solitaire or cribbage.

But his favorite activity was spending time and sharing laughs with his family and the many friends he made throughout his life.

Those who knew Dick appreciated his “wicked” sense of humor. He loved to laugh almost as much as he enjoyed making others laugh and, being your typical Mainer, he was a very prolific storyteller.

He was predeceased by his parents and has gone to join his daughter Lisa Huntress and his beloved dog Daisy.

Dick is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Janice (Beaulieu) Boothby whom he met at Arlan’s department store in 1962 and married in 1963; his daughter Stephanie Boothby; son Jon Boothby; son-in-law Jim Huntress; brother Larry Boothby; sister Bonnie Rand; brother-in-law (and fishing buddy) Tom Beaulieu; a large extended family and many, many friends.

His passing will leave a void in so many lives and he will be sadly missed.

In keeping with Dick’s wishes there will be no services. If you wish to acknowledge your relationship with Dick and his full, happy life please feel free to make a donation in his name to an animal shelter of your choosing.
