Stephen P. Walker

ISLAND FALLS – It is with great sadness that we share the news that Stephen Paul Walker passed away on May 10, 2023, at the age of 76, surrounded by his loved ones. Steve had been battling dementia for the last few years.

Steve was born in Biddeford on July 16, 1946, to Paul and Evelyn Walker. He graduated from Bonny Eagle High School where he played soccer and basketball. Then went on to attend Gorham Teachers College, now the University of Southern Maine, where he also played on the men’s soccer team. It was here that he met the love of his life, Mary Margaret Hunt aka “Bebe”. Steve graduated in 1968 and enlisted in the United States Navy.

He was stationed at Norfolk, Va. before being deployed on the USS Columbus to Patrol the Mediterranean Sea. On June 21, 1969, Steve and Bebe were married at the Catholic Church in Island Falls with reception following at Birch Point.

After four years of service, Bebe and Steve moved back to Maine and settled in Bangor. Steve and Bebe started their family, having Brian in 1975 and David in 1977. Steve began his career with UPS and moved their young family to Portland. In 1980 they completed their family with the birth of their daughter, Mary Catherine. Brian, David, and Mary all graduated from Deering High School.

Steve was a loving, loyal, and devoted husband and father. Always putting his family first and making sure Bebe and his children had everything they needed. Steve traveled a lot for his job as Head of Loss Prevention at UPS and enjoyed his time there.

He retired from UPS in 2001 in order to spend more time with Bebe and family. He spent the next 20-plus years enjoying many hobbies and traveling. Steve fell in love with Island Falls the first time he traveled from Standish to visit Bebe. Every summer vacation was spent on Pleasant Pond staying with dear, lifelong family friends the McAuliffes and Walshs at Camp Roosevelt. In 2001 Steve and Bebe purchased their own log cabin on the lake and turned it into a year-round house putting a full foundation and other upgrades to make it home.

Steve was an avid NASCAR fan and loved going on his trips in the spring and in the fall. He would follow from race to race up and down the east coast. Including going to Texas and Kansas for races. He would look forward to seeing his friends each year. New Hampshire was always a highlight because his son Brian would go with him every year.

During the winter months, Steve and Bebe would travel to warmer fun in the sun, like the Caribbean, Aruba, Bahamas, and Florida. At other times the two would go for a trip with the camper and stay at campgrounds which Steve loved doing. Mostly he loved spending time with Bebe and enjoying life.

He was a member of Va Jo Wa Golf Course and before that, Riverside Golf Course of Portland. Steve would complain about not being very good but didn’t care. He loved being on the golf course. As any golfer knows, it only takes one good shot to get you back on the course. Steve was a member of the Island Falls 4-wheelers Club. He enjoyed going on 4-wheeler and snowmobile rides throughout Aroostook County. Ice fishing was always a fun time and of course, before you knew it, he would have all the holes drilled and traps ready to go. He loved all his grandkids very much. Steve will be greatly missed.

Steve is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bebe; son, Brian and grandson, Nathaniel of Augusta/Island Falls; son, David and Barbara Lynn and grandsons Josiah and Sammy of the Walker Farm in Moro Plantation; daughter, Mary and Gavin Speaker and grandsons Ben and Zach of Atlanta, Ga.; his brother, Arthur “Jerry” Walker of Standish, and sister, Barbara of Standish; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Evelyn Walker; infant daughter, Kathleen Erin Walker; sister-in-law, Barbara Walker; and beautiful granddaughter, Alora Walker.

A graveside memorial service with full military honors will be June 24, at 1 p.m. at the St. Agnes Cemetery in Island Falls. To share condolences and memories online visit http://www.bowersfuneral.com
