Michael James Nixon

SCARBOROUGH – Michael James Nixon, 71, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2024, at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine. He bravely faced his battle with glioblastoma (GBM) with unwavering determination and an enduring sense of humor.

Born in Portland, Maine, on March 30, 1953, to Winifred O’Conner Nixon and John Edward Nixon, Michael is survived by his ex-wife, Linda Flynn, with whom he shared 25 years and three beloved children, Melissa “Missy” husband William Lathrop of Cape Elizabeth, Andrew wife Meredith Nixon of Sandwich, Mass., and Patrick Nixon of South Portland. He is also survived by his sister Patricia Nixon, partner Stephen Mardigan, and brothers Thomas, Matthew, and Peter Nixon. Michael took great pride in his six grandchildren, Devon, Killian, Tiernan, and Keegan Lathrop, and granddaughters Delaney and Hadley Nixon. Additionally, he is survived by his girlfriend, Laurie Nicholas.

Michael was predeceased by his parents, Winnie and Chic Nixon; and his brothers John, Joseph, and Martin Nixon.

Michael attended Sacred Heart, Portland High School, and the USM, where he forged lifelong friendships. He remained close to a special group of childhood friends, who continued to gather for monthly dinners.

Michael dedicated 27 years of his career to Hannaford Brothers Company, but his true passion was helping children and families stay together, which inspired him to establish Nixon Family Care. As he transitioned into semi-retirement, he discovered fulfilling work at New England Life Care. Michael was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

In his younger days, Michael was an avid athlete, working out and enjoying pickup basketball and football until back issues led him to take up running. This new passion allowed him to make many friends over the years and stay active until his health began to decline.

Michael will be remembered for his dedication to family and friends, passion for helping others, and indomitable spirit and humor. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. In a final finish line of generosity, Michael donated his body to the University of New England for educational purposes, continuing his legacy of giving back.

The love and care provided by his girlfriend Laurie, his daughter Melissa, and the selfless devotion of his son Patrick during this time were invaluable in his father’s final days.

The family expresses immense gratitude for the guidance, love, and support provided by the Maine Health Cancer Care staff, particularly Sam, Sarah, and Dr. Lu Emerson, and the compassionate care from Hospice of Southern Maine, especially Kelly Sarah, and Becca. You will always hold a special place in our hearts, as well as the many friends who called and visited over the past few months, thank you
