Betty A. Towne
ALFRED – Betty A. Towne, 78, passed away at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on the morning of Thursday, March 6, 2025, after battling with serious kidney disease for over 10 years.
A truly kind, generous and loving person, she was born on Nov. 22, 1946, in the Town of Alfred. She grew up on a farm on Kennebunk Road and enjoyed riding horses with her friends. She went to the Alfred elementary school that was a short walk from her home. She enjoyed many trips to the Alfred library to feed her desire to read.
She attended Sanford High School and then went to what was then called Gorham State Teachers College. After graduation, she became an elementary school teacher from 1968 to 2008. Most of those years were at Lyman Elementary School. She taught more than just the “three R’s” – she educated her students about nature, minerals, and wildlife with real earthly samples, and she did so in both the classroom as well as outside in natural habitats.
She met her husband, Michael Towne, in Kennebunk Lower Village, where she had a summer hotel job before attending college. Michael did a tour in the Army and when he got out, they married in 1968. Mike and Betty had their home built in Alfred on Federal Street where they lived until Betty’s passing.
