Tammy Munson, Gray’s director of code enforcement and planning, was recently named Code Officer of the Year by the Maine Building Officials and Inspectors Association.

Munson has a three-decade career as a code enforcement officer, and has been working in Gray for the past four years. She has also been working with North Yarmouth on its code enforcement needs for the past two years, as part of a mutual aid agreement between the two towns. Munson’s previous awards include a Rookie of the Year award in 2019 from the city of Auburn.

Munson, who was one of hundreds of officers nominated, received the award at the association’s annual membership meeting and training that took place in Lewiston on Dec. 4. The meeting was attended by multiple town of Gray staff members, including Interim Town Manager Denise Clavette.

At the ceremony, Munson said she was “grateful for the opportunity to create measurable and lasting impact within (her) community,” and that she “(valued) the relationships (she had built) and genuinely enjoyed supporting everyone (she meets).”

“I was overwhelmed and I was speechless,” Munson told Lakes Region Now. “It was just such an honor.”

“This award reflects not only exceptional professionalism and expertise, but also the deep respect and admiration she has earned across multiple communities,” Clavette said in a press release on the town website.

Munson, who was also recently promoted to the role of interim planning director following the retirement of Doug Webster, said she was working on changing the town’s density ordinances to comply with LD 1829. Gray will host a workshop on Tuesday, Dec. 16, to discuss the impact of the new law, which places several restrictions on municipal laws concerning housing and growth in order to address Maine’s affordable housing shortage, and is due to go into effect on July 1, 2026.

Munson said she was also working with the town’s Resiliency Committee on its watershed management plan and a proposed surface water ordinance. Regarding her plans for the next year, she said she was focused on any ordinance changes needed to comply with LD 1829, which she said would be a three-month process, as well as updating the town’s zoning ordinances.

Munson is not the only Gray town staff member to receive a statewide award this year. In March, Facilities and Parks Director Mo Russo received the Outstanding Parks Professional Award by the Maine Recreation and Park Association.
