There are few features we do at the Press Herald that generate as much discussion (and occasionally, heated debate) as our annual list of the best restaurants in Greater Portland.
While in previous years the list was compiled by our restaurant reviewer, this year we decided to approach the project a little differently. We simplified the categories of eateries – and most importantly, we kicked the responsibility to you, our readers, and the many food industry experts we have in Maine.
Explore the picks
In January, we sent out surveys asking for recommendations on the best bars and breweries; cafes and bakeries; and places for takeout, brunch and celebrating special occasions.
The response was overwhelming. We received almost 300 answers, some cheeky (“my kitchen”), but all thoughtful. You embraced new spots as well as longtime favorites, encompassing a variety of cuisines and price points. There was quite a lot of overlap between readers’ opinions and those of industry experts, which tells us Mainers have discriminating palates, and you definitely love to dine out.
This list combines 32 favorite eateries chosen by both readers and experts, and we’ve included a handy checklist and map so you can keep track of the places you’ve visited – and the ones still waiting for you.
We know this list is by no means exhaustive and likely missed several dozen other spots that deserve attention (including several James Beard award winners). But while we’re unlikely to put the debate to rest, that’s the joy of it, right?
We hope this list provides good fodder for discussion, inspiration for your next meal and serves as a blueprint for good eating this year. Bon appetit!
