Sylvia May Allen
WESTBROOK – Sylvia M. Allen, 92, passed away peacefully at her home on Feb. 28, 2026, following a brief illness. At the time of her passing, she was surrounded by the love of her children.
Born in Buxton on Nov. 29, 1933, Sylvia was the daughter of Zenas and Florence (Brown) Smith. She often shared fond memories of her upbringing on the family farm, where she was shaped by the values of a close-knit extended family. A 1951 graduate of Buxton High School, she married Ronald P. Allen in 1953. The couple first lived in Portland and eventually settled in Westbrook, where they remained for the rest of their lives.
Sylvia balanced a busy home life with a career at Sears Roebuck and a successful tenure as an Avon representative. Deeply committed to her community, she served as a dedicated Westbrook poll worker for many years.
An avid traveler and member of the Southern Maine Volkssport Association (SMVA), Sylvia’s passion for group walks led her to every state capital in the United States and to several countries abroad. As a member of SMVA, always ready when asked, she served on many committees and was a popular Volkssport personality in the Northeast.
Sylvia loved crafting and was a familiar face at local craft fairs. She loved going to her grandchildren’s games and school functions. She was a voracious reader and especially loved a good mystery. Sylvia was a collector of many things, including postcards, stamps, coins, thimbles, and buttons, to name just a few, and she never liked to pass up a yard sale.
Her parents; her husband Ronald (who passed away in 2003); and her brother, Harold Smith (who died in 2025); all preceded her in death.
She is survived by her four children, Gary L. Allen and his wife, Debra of East Amherst, N.Y., son Michael B. Allen and his wife Therese of Portland, daughter Vicki L. Allen of Westbrook, and son Larry R. Allen and his wife Kathleen of Gray. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Christian W., Sean M., Ryan P., Samantha K., Raechel M., Nicholas M., Sarah J., Kayla M.; her two great-grandchildren, Camron M., and Zoe S.; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Gentiva Hospice. Taylor, Bri, Rachel, and Kate, you always put a smile on her face. You made her final days so much easier, and we cannot begin to express our appreciation. A final special thank-you to Lisa M., who was not only her caretaker but a dear friend. You brightened her days, and she always looked forward to seeing you.
The family will hold a private memorial service in the spring, followed by interment at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland.
Instead of sending flowers, donations in her memory can be given to
