I’ve lived in New England on and off for about three years, but I’ll admit that I’ve only been in Maine for about two weeks. There’s a lot to love already.
Mainers love the outdoors, which I appreciate as a Coloradan. They care about their unique charm, like fiddleheads and wild blueberries — two things I’m still getting acquainted with.
What has struck me most so far is the deep pride people here have in their state.
That’s why I’m excited to help expand the Maine Trust for Local News’ York County coverage to Kittery, the Berwicks, York and Ogunquit.
I’m fresh off a master’s degree in journalism from Boston University and have a bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology from Colorado State University.
While I was at BU, I covered the Massachusetts State House for The New Bedford Light and contributed to various student publications. Here, I’ll be covering important issues like town and school budgets, the upcoming elections and other neighborhood affairs that impact your daily lives.
I’m here to bring you essential information about your communities, and to fill the gaps in media coverage.
This new beat also includes an opportunity to write about the people and places that make your communities unique. How did Marshwood High School get a hacky sack team? How is York’s Cliff Walk restoration going? Have a favorite local ice cream spot? Tell me about it!
I love being outdoors in my free time and plan to take full advantage of Maine’s countless offerings this summer.
You’ll also find me at live music events, playing the guitar, hunting for the best iced vanilla latte in the state (open to suggestions), traveling or brushing up on my skills as a retired college volleyball player.
In the last six years, I’ve somehow moved nine times, including nearly a year in the U.K. I’ve called many places home, and I’m proud to now include Maine on that list.
In the coming weeks, I’ll also be starting a weekly southern York County newsletter to give you a rundown of the recent happenings in your communities. I’m always eager for story tips, questions and suggestions. Email me at [email protected], and let me know yours!
