Charles Wendell Richardson
STANDISH – Charles Wendell Richardson passed away May 5, 2026, at home in Standish surrounded by his family.
Charles was born July 13, 1947, in Portland, the son of Harry Thorton Richardson and Florence Ruth Lemoine. Because his parents died when he was young, Charles was raised by his maternal grandmother, Mary Lemoine. Charles attended Portland schools and graduated from Portland High School in 1966. On April 8, 1975, he married Mary Jane Malia.
After graduation from high school, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Marines from 1966 to 1970. During that time, he was stationed at Khe San, Vietnam where he earned two purple hearts. After leaving the Marines, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in various locations in the United States. He was in the Army from 1970 to 1978. He then served in the Air National Guard in Maine from 1980 to 1983. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service.
Charles was a family man who loved music, movies, locksmithing and karate. Music was his big passion. In high school he played in a band, Age of Illusion. He was a seasoned guitar player. The story goes that as a teenager, he did not want to disturb others while he practiced. His solution was to go into the bathroom, climb into the tub, close the curtain, and practice his playing.
Charles is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Jane; a son, Daniel Collins and his partner Lisa Lemieux, a daughter, Victoria; his brother, Irwin John Richardson, Brian Cunningham, who sat in the tub with him; and his other Cunningham cousins, and grandchildren, Ashley and Kayler Macomber, and Hannah and Aidan Collins.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Harry Richardson and sister, Joann Crocket; a son, Kenneth A. Richardson, a daughter, Lisa Collins and her husband Paul Macomber.
The family is greatly appreciative of Lisa Lemieux for her caring and devotion to Charles in his final days.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at A.T. Hutchins, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland. Services will be on Thursday, May 21, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland.
