Barbara Hugo
RHINEBECK, N.Y. – Barbara Hugo, 78, a long-time resident of Rhinebeck, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
Born on Nov. 6, 1947, in Portland, Maine, Barbara was the daughter of the late Harmon and Mary (Berkofsky) Hugo.
From an early age, Barbara was deeply committed to causes that protected and enhanced human life through the expression of compassion and humanitarian ideals. That commitment remained a guiding force throughout her life and was reflected in both her work and personal pursuits.
During the late 1960s and 1970s, Barbara was actively involved in efforts to end U.S. participation in the wars in Viet Nam, Laos, and Cambodia. During that same period, she also worked to challenge educational practices that classified school children into restrictive categories based on one-time testing at an early age, believing every child deserved the opportunity to grow beyond imposed limitations.
It was during this time, Barbara would obtain her master’s in business administration from Duke University.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Barbara supported international initiatives in alternative medicine and emerging approaches that expanded traditional views of human potential and well-being. At the same time, she worked in the private sector, where she developed a practical and thoughtful approach to solving problems, improving organizations, and helping others achieve meaningful goals.
In the 2000s, Barbara turned much of her focus toward her personal and spiritual life. She practiced Buddhism faithfully and embraced its spiritual teachings and traditions. Her spiritual journey also included a visit to Tibet, which held deep meaning for her.
Barbara started out her career working as an editor for People Magazine in Manhattan, N.Y. Later, Barbara built and owned Electric River Productions which was based out of both Kingston and Rhinebeck, N.Y., and worked as a graphic designer.
Barbara remained active in her community throughout her life, serving on the Democratic Committee in both Hyde Park and Rhinebeck, N.Y. She also served as a Trustee of Dutchess Community College.
Barbara will be remembered for her compassion, independent spirit, and lifelong dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
In keeping with Barbara’s wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the care of Burnett & White Funeral Homes, Rhinebeck, NY 12572.
