Taj Indian Cuisine is to be recognized Thursday by the Maine Public Health Association for the business’ public health efforts .
The association, a non-governmental nonprofit, will name the restaurant a Public Health Business Champion in its annual awards ceremony. According to a press release, the award “recognizes a business for its leadership and commitment to integrating and promoting public health values into business practices.”
Taj is being honored for offering free meals during the pandemic, free Thanksgiving meals to those in need, and free meals from a self-serve cabinet outside the restaurant.
“Taj embodies community leadership, dignity, and compassion in its business practices,” the nomination for the award said. “They deserve recognition for their bravery and commitment to community, and inspiring others by leading by example.”
It is the third time since the award was first given in 2018 that a food business has been recognized. In 2020, it went to Hannaford markets, in 2024 to Wild Oats in Brunswick.
Taj is located in South Portland and owned by Sai Guntaka.
The annual awards also honor people and organizations that have contributed to public health programs, public health journalism, public health access and more.
