Portland Hearts of Pine conceded two goals in second-half stoppage time and suffered a stunning 3-2 loss to last-place Corpus Christi FC in a USL League One game Wednesday night in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The hosts were down 2-1 about five minutes into stoppage time when a corner kick was mishandled by Hearts keeper Hunter Morse and tumbled over the goal line.

Corpus Christi immediately went right back on the attack and forced a difficult save by Morse before earning another corner kick. This time, Sam Roscoe-Byrne leaped above Hearts defenders for a header than eluded Morse.

The victory was the first ever in USL1 for Corpus Christi, which had five losses and five ties in its first 10 matches. The hosts entered the match in last place in the 17-team league.

Until the shocking finishing, it appeared that JayTee Kamara had produced a winning goal for the second time in four days. Kamara, whose first goal of the season was the difference Saturday in a 2-1 victory over Spokane Velocity, put Hearts ahead in the 85th minute with a left-footed shot from the top of the penalty box into the left side of the goal. The play was set up by a centering pass from Ollie Wright.

A potential tying goal by Corpus Christi’s Jack Heaney in the first minute of stoppage time was waved off because Heaney was ruled offsides on a header in the box, but Portland still was unable to protect its lead.

Hearts led 1-0 at halftime after a goal by Brecc Evans a minute into first-half stoppage time. An entry by Josh Drack off Wright’s short corner kick was blocked, but Evans volleyed the loose ball inside the right post, to the left of keeper James Talbot.

Blake Bowen, whose corner kicks led to the final two goals, tied the game in 52nd minute. He beat Morse to the keeper’s right when shot from just inside the box after a pass from Nacho Abeal.

Portland had a four-game unbeaten streak snapped and dropped to 3-3-5, in ninth place.
