A missing boater was found dead in a Rockland lake on Sunday night.

Divers from the Maine Warden Service recovered the body of 59-year-old Timothy Payson, of Rockland, from Chickawaukie Lake around 10 p.m.

A resident reported hearing a man yelling for help from the water Sunday morning. He arrived at the water to find a small, Zodiac-style boat moving in circles with a dog onboard but did not see a man on the boat or in the water.

After first responders arrived and turned off the boat’s motor, search teams from the warden service began looking for Payson with divers and sonar equipment around 1 p.m.

Payson, who was confirmed to be the boat’s operator, was found in about 15 feet of water.

Mark Latti, a spokesperson for the warden service, said Monday that Payson was not wearing a life jacket when he was found.

Latti said Payson’s cause and manner of death are pending until the state medical examiner’s office completes an autopsy.
