Rep. Ken Fredette’s June 14 op-ed, about the need for bipartisan work to combat Alzheimer’s disease, was right on target and very timely. The Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act now moving through Congress, to authorize Medicare to pay for a simple blood test that can detect the disease before symptoms appear, is the key to early diagnosis.
Just as routine screening transformed breast cancer outcomes, the bipartisan ASAP Act will make early detection the standard for Alzheimer’s treatment, extending and someday saving lives. Rep. Pingree and Sen. Collins are co-sponsors, and that’s great. It would be even better if the entire Maine delegation would sign on.
