Eleanor Morse: ‘This Foreign Land’

Maine Literary Award-winning author Eleanor Morse will be reading from her new novel, “This Foreign Land.” The story traces the reaction of a Mainer in 2018, when the attorney general announces a policy regarding immigrant families being separated from their parents at the southern border. The evening features music by guitarist Isaac Rodrigues, and 15% of proceeds from all book sales at the store will be donated to Rio Valley Relief Project and the Immigration Legal Advocacy Project.
Ossipee Valley Fair

The Ossipee Valley Fair has been happening since 1980, a stone’s throw away from the New Hampshire border and the White Mountains. It’s got all the hallmarks of a classic agricultural fair, including livestock shows, 4-H exhibits, horse and ox pulls, carnival rides, live music, local food, crafts and much more. Demos include goat milking, blacksmithing, sheep clipping and wool spinning.

‘Arrows & Operators: Visual Debates in Music’

For the first time ever, the Art Gallery at University of New England in Portland presents an art opening with live music. “Arrows & Operators: Visual Debates in Music” explores the intersection of visual art and experimental music, featuring a live performance of selections from composer Cornelius Cardew’s score “Treatise,” written between 1963 and 1967. You’ll hear performances from musicians Philip Greenlief, Frank Mauceri, Jeremy Brogan, Sigrid Harmon, Tessa Irons, Bonnie Han Jones and Cleek Schrey. While they’re playing, you’ll view works by artists CF, Greenlief, Mauceri and Lauren Tosswill.
Brownstone Brews & Bites

Do your part to support the historic Victoria Mansion by attending a fabulous garden party on its grounds. This year’s Brownstone Brews & Bites fundraiser features food from Cheese Louise and music from the Pete Kilpatrick Trio. You’ll also enjoy Allagash beer, and everyone gets an Allagash chalice to use during the event, then take home as a souvenir. Your ticket also includes a tour of the mansion’s fascinating first floor.

Moxie Festival

The annual Moxie Festival is steeped in the history of an elixir created by Dr. Augustin Thompson of Union in 1876. Its original purpose was to cure multiple ailments. These days, it’s a popular soda that people either love or despise, but either way the Moxie Festival is a whole lot of fun. Festivities include a parade, car show, 5K race, fireworks, battle of the bands competition, whoopie pie eating contest and a Moxie chugging contest. This year’s theme is “Moments in History with Moxie.”
