FREEPORT – Susan “Dr. Sue” Allen St.Mary, 81, passed away on May 4, 2026, in Freeport. Born on Dec. 7, 1944, Dr. Sue was a cherished member of the medical community, a devoted wife, mother, and an enthusiast of music and the sea.
Dr. Sue completed her undergraduate studies at Wellesley College in 1966 and earned her MD from Case Western Reserve University. She dedicated her career to pediatric nephrology, becoming the first and only pediatric nephrologist in the state of Maine for many years. Her medical practice, Bayview Pediatrics in Yarmouth, drew patients from across the state, who sought her out for her reputation of providing compassionate and joyful care. Known for her unique approach to pediatric care, she often used puppets to lighten the mood during appointments and was known to take work home to make late-night calls to concerned parents, ensuring their peace of mind.
Beyond her professional life, Sue was an avid sailor, navigating the east coast from Canada to Florida. After retiring, she continued to spread joy through pet therapy programs at local hospitals with her dogs. Her love for music was expressed as a member of her church choir and through regular performances with local singing groups.
Sue is survived by her husband, Jonathan L. St.Mary; and her son, Robert E. St.Mary and his wife Karen, and grandchildren Benjamin, Mia and Skylar of Uxbridge, Mass. She was a beacon of light and warmth to her family, friends, and all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the fall to honor Sue’s legacy.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland, or to Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Ohio. These contributions will continue to support the causes close to Dr. Sue’s heart.
