This weekend, Democratic committees in each of Maine’s 16 counties will pick delegates who will meet later in July to select the party’s nominee to replace Graham Platner on the November ballot for U.S. Senate.

The Maine Democratic Party is holding the statewide convention July 25 in Bangor. It will feature 601 delegates — 500 delegates apportioned from the 16 counties, plus 101 state committee members — who will hear speeches from each candidate before voting on a nominee.

The party had to scramble to put together the new process after Platner ended his Senate bid to unseat Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, following the publication of a Politico story on a former girlfriend who said Platner sexually assaulted her in 2021. State and national Democrats swiftly called on the 41-year-old Sullivan oysterman and military veteran to drop out of the race in one of the most stunning political developments in Maine history.

Here’s a rundown of what we know about each county’s plan to pick representatives to the state convention. The deadline for Mainers to declare their interest in becoming a delegate is set for 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Delegates must have been registered Democrats as of June 9, and although preregistration is not required for each county meeting, officials are strongly encouraging it.

Androscoggin County

The Androscoggin County Democratic Committee said it will hold a virtual nominating meeting Saturday that starts at 1 p.m. with a two-hour check-in period. The formal meeting will begin at 3 p.m., and voting will occur at 4 p.m. The committee has not yet publicized a registration link.

Androscoggin County will have 31 delegates for the convention.

Aroostook County

Aroostook County Democrats will meet on Zoom from 2-4 p.m. Sunday to select delegates. The county committee chair, Alison Willette, said Tuesday that a meeting link will come later this week, and that the virtual format allows participants to tune in from anywhere in the large county.

A “candidate mingle” will also happen Saturday from 9-11 a.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post located at 130 Presque Isle St. in Fort Fairfield. Willette said anyone registered to be considered as a delegate, anyone planning to vote for delegates from Aroostook County and any candidates for any other local, state or federal elections are invited to attend the Saturday event. It will allow attendees to pitch themselves as delegates or to ask candidates questions.

Aroostook County will have 15 delegates.

Cumberland County

The Cumberland County Democratic Committee will meet virtually Saturday. The “pre-verification” portion starts at 2 p.m., and the meeting begins at 4 p.m.

Democrats in the state’s most populous county, home to Maine’s biggest city of Portland, will have 149 delegates at the convention.

Franklin County

Franklin County Democrats will meet Saturday at the University of Maine at Farmington. (Go to the campus for further directions.) Doors open at 9 a.m., and the meeting starts at 11 a.m.

Franklin County will have nine delegates.

Hancock County

The Hancock County Democratic Committee said it will meet Saturday at Ellsworth Middle School. Check-in and day-of-event registration is from 8-10 a.m. A “social hour” to meet potential delegates and candidates is from 9-10 a.m., and the meeting starts at 10 a.m.

Hancock County will have 23 delegates.

Kennebec County

The Kennebec County Democratic Committee will meet Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center, with check-in beginning at 10 a.m. and the meeting starting at noon.

Kennebec County will have 40 delegates.

Knox County

Knox County Democrats will meet Sunday at Oceanside High School in Rockland.

Check-in begins at 11 a.m. The formal meeting starts at 1 p.m.

Knox County will have 18 delegates.

Lincoln County

Lincoln County Democratic Committee Chair Keith Mestrich said the meeting will happen Saturday at Wiscasset Middle High School. Doors open at 1 p.m., and the meeting starts at 3 p.m.

Lincoln County will have 15 delegates.

Oxford County

Oxford County Democrats will gather Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in South Paris, with the meeting starting at 3 p.m.

Oxford County will have 17 delegates.

Penobscot County

Penobscot County Democrats said their meeting would be virtual. It starts at noon, and voting will begin at 2 p.m.

Penobscot County will have 44 delegates.

Piscataquis County

Piscataquis County Democrats will meet Sunday at Central Hall Commons in Dover-Foxcroft. Doors open at 1 p.m., and the meeting starts at 3 p.m.

Piscataquis County will have four delegates.

Sagadahoc County

Sagadahoc County Democrats will meet Sunday at Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham, with doors opening at 1 p.m. before the meeting begins at an unspecified time.

Sagadahoc County will have 16 delegates.

Somerset County

Somerset County Democrats will meet at the Poulin Farm Red Barn Venue beginning at noon Sunday. The meeting will begin in earnest at 2 p.m.

Somerset County will have 12 delegates.

Waldo County

The Waldo County Democratic Committee will hold a hybrid meeting Sunday, with a Zoom link available here. Check-in starts at 2 p.m., and the meeting starts at 4 p.m.

Waldo County will have 15 delegates.

Washington County

The Washington County Democratic Committee said it will meet Saturday at Washington County Community College’s St. Croix Hall Lecture Hall in Calais. Registration and a candidate “meet and greet” begins at 8 a.m. Doors close at 10 a.m., and voting begins at 10:15 a.m.

Washington County will have eight delegates.

York County

York County Democratic Committee Chair Kathie Purdy said the meeting will happen Sunday at the Sanford Performing Arts Center. Check-in is from 9-11 a.m. Voting will happen from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The delegates will get announced at 1 p.m.

York County will have 84 delegates.
