Another fast moving storm is headed for Maine.  A storm now located around the mid-Atlantic region will rapidly intensify as it moves up the coastline and past Maine early Sunday.  This storm will bring a swath of snow to the area overnight.  The snow will end rapidly early in the morning in southern Maine and should be over in the  Portland  area between 4 AM and 6AM.  Further east the snow will linger a bit longer.  There may be significantly more snow across extreme eastern Maine from Machais to Calais where 6-12 inches of snow is likely.  Across the coastal plain from York to Bar Harbor and about 50 miles inland a general 4-7" snowfall is likely.  As you move further west into the foothills 2-4 inches is a good bet with less as you approach far western Maine.  My total amounts could be too high by and inch or two if the storm moves faster than I expect.

I’ll be updating the forecast on Twitter at @growingwisdom

As mentioned the storm will end quite early Sunday and I expect sunshine to return during the afternoon.  Winds will be brisk and temperatures wil remain in the 20s making it feel quite cold. The cold dry weather is going to continue all week taking us in the new year.  I expect as we head towards the latter half of the week even colder air will filer into the region and we will see several mornings below zero even at the coast.  High temperatures this weekend may remain in the zero to 10 above zone for skiers so be prepared to bundle up.  The skiing is fantastic so take advantage of this early season winter bonus.

Backing up to the rest of your Saturday, the weather looks dry for the daylight hours.  There could be a few flurries around the region, but the steady accumulating snow will not move in until dark.  Once the snow arrives it could come down quite hard at .5 to 1 inch per hour around midnight.  Winds will also increase especially along the coast, but not nearly as strong as our last storm.

Tonight’s storm is going to be moving quite rapidly and that is a good thing. This will become a very intense storm and if it was forecast to move slower, our amounts would be two or three times what I am forecasting.  I don’t expect the storm to slow down because the jet stream that is carrying to storm is moving so fast.

January thaw
While I know some of you don’t want to think about a thaw in January, there are some signs of a warming trend during the second week of the month.  This would actually be fairly typical as we do often experience a break in the cold and snow in the first month of the year.  More on this as we get into 2013.

Gardening This week’s video talks about soil compaction. If you have an area of your lawn that won’t grow grass very well or a tree that isn’t performing, the issue might be soil compaction. Take a look at this video and see how soil compaction can be fixed.
