The Black Bears (7-15-6, 4-8-2 Hockey East) led 2-0 after one period on goals by Merchant and Brian Morgan, and Merchant made it 3-0 early in the second.

UMass (7-16-4, 2-11-4) closed to within a goal three times, but Maine maintained its lead with the help of Byron’s goal early in the third and Nolan Vesey’s power-play tally with 4:15 remaining.

Maine goalie Matt Morris finished with 31 saves.
