HARWICH, Mass. — Southern Maine posted an 8-4 win over Worcester State on Wednesday night in opening-round action of the New England baseball regionals at Whitehouse Field.
Scarborough’s Chris Bernard hit a home run to go with three RBI.
Huskies starter Logan Carmen, making his fifth start of the season, was touched up for a pair of runs in the opening inning. But USM wasted little time in responding, posting a run in the second and four in the third.
USM faces Tufts at 8 p.m. Thursday.
Carmen, with help from relievers Dan Kinnon and Ryan Browner, improved to 3-1.
Worcester State’s Ben Libuda, fourth in the rotation, dropped to 5-3.
USM trailed 2-1 after two innings before scoring four times in the third.
In the third inning, Sam Dexter led off with a first-pitch hit off Libuda before Bernard unloaded a healthy drive that sailed over the head of left fielder Jeff Bolio, resulting in an RBI triple.
With the score tied 2-2, catcher Matt Verrier lined an RBI double into the gap past Bolio to score Bernard. Verrier moved to third on a single by Troy Thibodeau and both scored on a single by Nick DiBiase.
Bernard added to the Lancers’ woes by capping a three-run sixth with a two-run blast that quickly escaped the ballpark, providing the Huskies with a six-run advantage.
Dexter opened the scoring in the inning, knocking home freshman Paul McDonough, who reached on a double before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman John Carey.
The Lancers’ offense perked up in the fifth, loading the bases, but DiBiase ended the threat with an outstanding grab of a rapidly sinking liner off the bat of Adam Barry of Worcester State, ending the threat.
