The body of a Massachusetts man was recovered from the Stillwater River in Orono Wednesday morning, a day after his kayak overturned, according to a statement from the Maine Warden Service.

The warden service had been searching for Mohammad Jamal, 37, of Malden, Massachusetts, since Tuesday evening. His 7-year-old niece, who was wearing a life jacket, was rescued, but Jamal did not resurface. Earlier reports had identified the girl as Jamal’s daughter.

Dive teams from the warden service and the Maine State Police recovered the body at around 8:30 a.m. in about 13 feet of water. Jamal was not wearing a life jacket, the warden service said

The service said cold-water conditions that still exist in Maine make it extremely difficult for boaters to safely get to shore if they go overboard, especially if they are not wearing a life jacket.
