NEW YORK — Mets third baseman David Wright has been scheduled for surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck.
The team said Wright would have the operation on Thursday in Marina del Rey, California. The decision to proceed with surgery was made after weeks of tests, rest and anti-inflammatory injections.
New York did not reveal an estimated timeframe for Wright’s potential return, but the 33-year-old captain is expected miss most of the remainder of the season – perhaps all of it.
Wright said in a statement that his “neck simply did not respond to any of the treatments of the past few weeks.” He says while it’s frustrating, he’s “determined to make a full recovery and get back on the field as soon as I can to help the Mets win.”
• Part-time center fielder Juan Lagares was placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Wednesday, with a sprained left thumb. Utility player Ty Kelly was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas.
TWINS: All-Star closer Glen Perkins will miss the rest of the season because of a torn labrum and rotator cuff problems that will likely require surgery, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
There’s a chance Perkins could be ready at or near the start of the 2017 season, but it could take a little longer.
CARDINALS: Brandon Moss, a former Portland Sea Dog, has 11 homers in 167 at-bats – an averge of one homer for every 11 times at bat.
Moss’ long-ball rate is better than that of Colorado’s Nolan Arenado, who leads the National League with 20 and is connecting every 12 at-bats.
PHILLIES: Pitcher Alec Asher was suspended for 80 games for violating Major League Baseball’s drug agreement following a positive test for a banned performance-enhancing substance.
The 24-year-old right-hander, a 40-man roster player on option to Lehigh Valley and on the Triple-A team’s disabled list, tested positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone, an anabolic steroid used to increase speed and strength.
