When Mike Lowe joined the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram’s staff in 1982, he never thought he was setting roots. But he learned to love Maine, its people, its games and, especially, its stories. It’s hard to say what he covers because, well, he covers everything. Over the years he’s been fortunate to witness some of the biggest sports events in Maine and elsewhere, from the Little League World Series to the actual World Series, from an NCAA ice hockey championship for Maine to an AHL championship for the Portland Pirates, from seven Super Bowls for the Patriots to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He’s interviewed stars and personalities such as Muhammad Ali, Tom Brady, Seth Wescott, Michael Phelps, Ian Crocker, Paul Kariya, Julia Clukey, Kevin “Killer” Kaminski and Joan Benoit Samuelson. Yet his favorite stories often involve Maine high school sports and the passion they stir. Nothing compares to the bond between a high school and its town. He collects comic books, loves listening to the Red Sox on the radio on a warm summer night or leaning back in his recliner with a good book. He also loves, absolutely loves, chocolate-covered peanuts. A native of New Bedford, Mass., he lives in Saco with his wife Tracie and has three children and four grandchildren.

Patriots Beat: Branch back, just where he wants
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The first indication that Deion Branch could have a role with the New England Patriots this year was the locker. Located right next to good friend Tom Brady, Branch’s locker was never cleaned out after he was released by the Patriots on Aug. 31, one of the final cuts in training camp. […]

Patriots Beat: Gostkowski accepts blame
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Stephen Gostkowski sat in his locker, his back to an ever-growing mob of television cameras, microphones and recorders, as he put on his socks and sneakers. Patriots Beat: Take a deep breath, the nose is just fine
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Amazingly, it took nearly 12 minutes for anyone to ask Tom Brady about the status of possibly the most famous nose in New England Patriots history. “It’s OK,” Brady said Wednesday at the end of his weekly press conference at Gillette Stadium. “My wife likes it so I’m good.” Ever since Sunday […]

Patriots Beat: Five keys to New England’s season
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Normally, when Bill Belichick says he doesn’t know something, it’s because he doesn’t want someone else to know something. Trade secrets and such. But when Belichick said last week he wasn’t sure what to expect from his New England Patriots this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans in the season opener, he was […]
