Portland 1, Cheverus 0:One soccer goal does it
The boys’ soccer teams from Portland High and Cheverus both had their moments during their annual regular-season meeting, but the biggest moment belonged to the Bulldogs’ Ralph Houanche, who scored the game’s only goal.
Houanche’s unassisted goal came with 21:22 remaining in the first half, giving Portland a 1-0 victory in an SMAA game. It was his second goal of the season.

Girls’ soccer: One cannon of a shot ignites Deering victory over McAuley
Kevin Olson, the Deering High girls’ soccer coach, noticed early in preseason practice the velocity of freshman Alexis Elowitch’s shot.
“Alexis has a cannon for a shot,” said Olson.
Late in the first half Wednesday, Elowitch’s cannon hit the right post and caromed into the goal. Elowitch’s score and strong pressure in the second half carried Deering to a 1-0 victory against McAuley in an SMAA game at Memorial Field.
