Our View: Looking for a mayor who has a vision for Portland
Candidates for this office should not be limited to members of the current city government.
Our View: LePage victory marks shift in philosophy
Maine has elected a governor who promises to take the state in a conservative direction.
Our View: State House control undergoes dramatic change
While it was possible to anticipate some of the events of Tuesday’s voting based on the polls, there was one outcome that wasn’t even hinted at.
That the Republican Party would take control of both houses of the Maine Legislature wasn’t on very many political horizons.
That achievement — along with the strong showing of Eliot Cutler in the governor’s race — makes this election one for the record books.
Our View: Anti-drug campaign will take the whole community
It’s not just police, but neighbors and landlords who will rid Grant Street of dealers.
Our View: Violence, not votes, still political force in Iraq
As Americans went to the polls, Iraqis endured another day of fighting in the streets.
Our View: Rise in police callsfor mental crises cause concern
It’s good that Portland’s police department is developing expertise, but why so many calls?
Our View: The voiceof the voter is the last word
Mainers have heard from the candidates. Starting with the 21 people who announced last year that they were interested in running for governor, through the seven-way Republican and five-way Democratic primaries in June, leading to two major-party nominees and three independents who are on today’s ballot.
Then there are the men and women who are running for the 151 seats in the Maine House of Representatives and 35 in the state Senate. That doesn’t begin to take in all the candidates for local office like selectman, city councilor or county commissioner.
Another View: Creationism is not science and should not be taught in schools
Critical thinking is essential to scientific thought, but faith is the bedrock of religion.
Our View: Outside money changing Maine legislative races
A deluge of interest group money is making this the most expensive campaign in history.
