Because of coronavirus precautions, this year’s competition will be held outdoors at a riverfront estate about 25 miles north of Manhattan in Tarrytown, N.Y., June 12-13.

Warmer conditions seem to speed up the sharks’ growing process, and that means they hatch earlier and are born exhausted.

Sometimes sharks are intentionally caught by fishing fleets, but more often they are reeled in incidentally as “ bycatch,” in the course of fishing.
