Tom Caron: Division winner gets glory… and baseball’s home edge

Starting tonight, they meet again. The Red Sox and Yankees will spend the next three nights sizing one another up as they roll into the final month of the season. Once again they are fiercely battling for the division title – the winner of this series will move onto Labor Day weekend in first place.

Does it matter? Barring a major collapse, both will be playing baseball in October. They have run away from the rest of the AL East and any other playoff contenders. The team that’s second will undoubtedly win the wild card. And just making the playoffs is the goal, right?

Red Sox end their drought at Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas — Adrian Gonzalez rediscovered his power stroke and Jacoby Ellsbury made an immediate impact in his return to the lineup for the Boston Red Sox, who finally won a game in Texas.

Gonzalez homered twice after going deep only once in 155 at-bats over the previous 39 games, and Boston beat the AL West-leading Rangers 11-5 Tuesday night to move within two percentage points of the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

“I wasn’t hitting as many home runs, but I wasn’t worried about it,” said Gonzalez, who leads the majors with a .346 batting average. “I was getting on base. The main thing is we’re winning.”

Rangers silence Red Sox in 4-0 loss

ARLINGTON, Texas — C.J. Wilson stood at his locker after pitching 6 2/3 scoreless innings for Texas wearing a T-shirt he designed bearing the image of teammate Mike Napoli with a chef’s hat and holding a spatula.

So appropriate.

Wilson’s 13th win and Napoli’s three-run homer were the primary ingredients for the Rangers in a 4-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday night in the opener a four-game series that is a potential playoff preview.
