As we prepare for our summer programs, people ask us if we are entering our busy season…. but in the Standish Recreation Department, every season is our busy season!

The nine-member Recreation Committee has been very busy over this past year, as it continues its efforts to raise funds to convert our ice skating rink at Johnson Field into a year-round multi-purpose outdoor sports complex. Included in its fundraising efforts have been the two ski and sports equipment sales that were held in the spring and fall of last year, the spaghetti supper held last fall, and the April Fools Day Dance featuring Motor Booty Affair. Upcoming events that are being held to support this venture include the first annual Mountain Division Trail Family Fun Walk and Run on June 4 and a L.L. Bean canoe raffle, with tickets being sold throughout the summer months.

Besides the efforts of these dedicated volunteers, there has been a Senior Citizen Committee formed, which is focusing its efforts on developing new programs for seniors in our community. If you haven’t seen the Senior newsletter which is distributed every other month, please call the Recreation Department at 642-2875 to request the next edition. It covers all of the special events and programs that are being offered to the senior population. Consider joining us as we head off to the Vermont Quilt Show on Saturday, June 25 or to the Balsams Resort in New Hampshire on June 29 – we promise to make it worth your while!

Parents, don’t forget to attend one of our Parent Information Sessions in May to register your children for our 7-week summer camp program or one of our many Outreach Activities or Specialty Camps. Check out our Web site at www.standishrec.org for complete details.

Watch for our newly-acquired Standish Recreation bus to be out and about this summer – hopefully you will enjoy hearing the sounds of children, teens, families and senior citizens having a great time recreating!

For additional information on any of our programs, please contact us by phone or e-mail standishrec@pivot.net. And thanks for all of your continued support!
