In the first such visit in more than a decade, a U.S. Navy capital ship will visit Portland Harbor for the holiday weekend.

The USS Iwo Jima, an amphibious assault ship, will be in the harbor for four days, and will be open for public tours on Monday, July 4.

The ship carries about 30 helicopters and jets, although it will not be fully loaded during its port call. The ship is 844 feet long and has a displacement of 40,500 tons. It is about the size of a World War II-era aircraft carrier and has a crew of some 1,400.

The ship will arrive on Saturday morning under strict security and port officials said a buffer will be enforced. The ship will dock at Berth One at the Portland Ocean Terminal at noon.

Members of the ship’s crew will be busy throughout the weekend. On July 2, the color guard and crew will attend the Portland Symphony Orchestra concert at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth. On Sunday, the ship will host tours for invited veterans.

On July 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the ship will be open for public tours. Portland officials are asking those who wish to tour the ship to park at the International Marine Terminal by the Casco Bay Bridge and a shuttle bus will transport people to the ship. The ship will leave on July 5 at 10 a.m.

Hosting similar events with different ships is something the city is interested in doing in the future.

“If this is a success this is a business we really want to develop in Portland,” said Portland Transportation Director Jeff Monroe, a Cape Elizabeth resident.
