I was pleased to read about Andrew Carroll’s upcoming discussion in South Portland (at Nonesuch Books and Cards, Mill Creek Shopping Center in South Portland, on Monday, July 25, at 7 p.m.) and wanted to point out that he generously placed 75,000 letters on deposit with the Gilder Lehrman Collection earlier this year.

These letters will be a tremendous resource and will, I’m confident, help add to the rich body of American history scholarship that arises when students, teachers and scholars have access to primary source materials.

On May 10, historians and members of the public celebrated Andrew’s work with a reading of wartime letters. Guests who read from the letters included author Kurt Vonnegut, television host Jane Pauley, Doonesbury creator Gary Trudeau, television news anchor Ann Curry, humorist Christopher Buckley and Frederick Douglass IV.
