After six years on the Cape Elizabeth Town Council, Jack Roberts has announced his intention not to run for a third term. Roberts cited back problems as a major reason for his decision.
“I’ve enjoyed most of it,” Roberts said. “I do this with a bit of sadness.”
In a letter to town employees and his fellow councilors Roberts wrote: “There will be many challenges in the next three years and I am disappointed that I will not have the opportunity to vote on them. I wish for all of my fellow Councilors, and the council-elect, the enlightenment they will need meet the tough choices head on.”
Roberts went on to thank the citizens of Cape Elizabeth for giving him the opportunity to serve them, the municipal workforce, the town manager, assistant town manager and town clerk. He also thanked his fellow councilors “for their willingness to share views, vote as they saw fit, and move on without animosity toward each other over strongly held views. It doesn’t always work out that way.”
Roberts said he is not endorsing any candidate, but would like to see a contested race so people have a choice.
The second seat coming up for reelection will be defended by Town Council Chairman Anne Swift-Kayatta. Swift-Kayatta took out nomination papers Tuesday and will be seeking a third term on the council.
“I’m looking forward to the race and hearing what’s on the minds of the citizens of Cape Elizabeth,” Swift-Kayatta said. “I’ve enjoyed serving on the council and would appreciate the opportunity to serve the town again.”
