I am responding to Donna Pierce’s request for opinions on condom demonstration in the eighth grade sex education class (Guest Column, Aug. 25.)
As a Scarborough parent, I have no problem whatsoever with this demonstration. I also believe the “abstinence is best” message is extremely important, but the condom demonstration is an honest acknowledgement that children do not always take their parents’ and teachers’ advice.
Kids will be making their own choices and have to live with those choices. If a condom demonstration can prevent a future unwanted pregnancy, or the transmission of any disease, then I’m all for it.
The AIDS virus, in particular, has changed sexual intercourse into a potentially life-threatening situation and our kids need all the information they can get.
