On Sunday, September 25, the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust will be celebrating their 20th anniversary and are still looking for volunteers to help with the events planned for the day.
Volunteers are needed to help with the Blake Hall & Allen CELT Challenge Sprint Triathlon that will begin in the morning at the Richard’s Community Pool at the rear of the Cape Elizabeth High School and the subsequent Harvest Festival and Community Barbecue beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Gull Crest Fields.
At the CELT/Rand Stoneworks Harvest Festival volunteers are needed to help in the kids area, with the food, cooking, traffic and parking.
Family and kid-friendly events at the Harvest Festival include kite making, kite flying, face painting, gourd painting, a rubber chicken catapult, a hula-hoop contest, a community garden tour, a nature-based scavenger hunt for children as well as the “best tasting pie contest.”
People are still being recruited to register for the “best tasting pie contest.” Pies will be judged in four different categories: best looking pie, chocolate, fruit and cream/custard. The judges will be Cape Elizabeth Town Councilors David Backer, Anne Swift-Kayatta, Michael Mowles, Mary Ann Lynch and Jack Roberts.
“We have invited all of the town councilors of Cape Elizabeth to be judges for the best pie tasting contest,” said Phyllis Coggeshall, president of the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust. Residents from neighboring towns interested in the competition need not be concerned about possible bias as pies will be presented to judges without identifying the contestant beforehand. Each registrant is asked to bring two pies, one for the judges and one to sell by the slice.
If interested in volunteering for the triathlon or Harvest Festival or to enter the Best Tasting Pie Contest contact the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust at 767-6054 or at [email protected] prior to the event.
The Harvest Festival will also include a Harvest Market. “We have encouraged all of the local farmers in Cape Elizabeth to participate in the Rand Stoneworks Harvest Market,” Chris Franklin, executive director for the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust, said. The land trust is the beneficiary of proceeds from the harvest market and preceding triathlon. “To date, we have gained firm commitments from Turkey Hill Farm, Alewives Brook Farm and L&A Farms, all of Cape Elizabeth.”
