The Scarborough Public Library would like to thank the many citizens who contributed books to Project Katrina: Read for Relief.
Thousands of titles were collected and are on their way to people displaced by the hurricanes. Our Library could not have accommodated the shipment of these books without the donated packing materials from the UPS Store in Scarborough, and Nonesuch Books in Millcreek, South Portland.
CD&L provided courier service to move the cartons to a staging area in Gardiner for books from libraries throughout the state. International Paper donated a trailer to drive the books to a Red Cross distribution center in Monroeville, Ala.
A child interviewed on CNN remarked on the hardest thing to leave behind: He said, “I left my favorite book.” Thanks to our generous community, we will be reuniting old friends, introducing new ones and providing some much needed respite through the gift of books.
