Two people are running for two seats on the Cape Elizabeth School Board: Incumbent Katharine Ray is seeking her second term, and Linda J. Winker is in her first run for elective office.

Katharine Ray has held a seat on the board since 2003. The Cape Elizabeth High School graduate has lived in the area her whole life and moved back to town 13 years ago. She is a retired banker and currently works as a recruiter for businesses. She is married with a daughter in the middle school.

She was on the Southern Maine Technical College Advisory Council and is a member of the South Portland/Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club and the United Way of Greater Portland Foundation.

Ray said she is running again because she doesn’t feel she has finished contributing. She said the School Board’s responsibility is to balance the need to continue providing an excellent education to Cape students while working under severe budget constraints.

Linda J. Winker is a graduate of the Cape Elizabeth school system. After many years living out of state Winker returned with her husband and two children to Cape in 2002.

She and her husband returned to Cape for the quality of the schools, which her children attend, and the small-town feel of the community. She was a former mortgage banker and currently works as a retail associate at Jordan’s Lawn and Garden Center.

She has been involved in the schools as a classroom aide, fund-raiser and chaperone.

This is Winker’s first run for public office. She said that as a mother of two school-aged children the opportunity to run for the School Board was the perfect opportunity for her to get involved.

She said that if elected she would work “to ensure the taxpayers’ investment in education delivers a quality education to our students and keeps the Cape Elizabeth school district amongst the strongest in the nation.”
