Bayley’s Camping Resort is requesting the town’s permission to expand its campground by 181 campsites, which if approved would bring the total number of sites there to more than 700.
The campground is located on a 124-acre parcel on Pine Point Road and has been in operation since 1971. Since it opened, the campground has received permission for other expansion projects on the site, according to a letter written by Jim Fisher, president of North East Civil Solutions, which is assisting with the plans.
The campground has seen an increase in business and feels that an expansion is necessary, according to Fisher. The proposed expansion has been part of the campground’s overall plans, and it was a matter of having the necessary businesses before bringing it forward.
“It has grown steadily as a very successful Scarborough business, continually expanding throughout the years,” Fisher writes.
Except for 10 small cabins that will be located near the campground’s back gate, no other permanent structures are proposed. These cabins will be used for seasonal camping only. The areas where the expansion will occur have been maintained as a potential campsite, although they have not moved forward.
The issue now rests with the Zoning Board of Appeals, which must decide whether the plans will move forward. The board will meet on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.
