Scarborough athletic booster clubs have agreed to stop hosting middle school dances after some concerns were raised about inappropriate behavior by the students.
“We’ve had an understanding that the booster clubs won’t be sponsoring dances anymore,” said Scarborough Middle School Principal Joanne Sizemore.
The booster clubs have sponsored five or six dances this year but have stopped because of “student behavior issues,” Sizemore said. “We’ve had some problems that came into the school with regards to the dances,” she said.
She declined to provide any more specific information, but said that it was related to inappropriate dancing.
The middle school will continue to have dances this year, Sizemore said, but they will be sponsored and supervised by the school and will not be as large or as frequent as they have been in the past.
Scarborough Athletic Director Frank Spencer said the number of students attending the dances has grown over the years with increasing enrollment.
He said Wentworth Intermediate School, where the dances are held, is no longer a viable space because it is too small. He said many of the problems related to having too many students in too small of an area.
However, the decision leaves the various booster clubs with one less option for generating revenue since the dances provided a steady stream of money.
“It’s not an unimportant part of what they do in terms of fund-raising,” Spencer said.
