We were sad to report this week the news of the death of Brittany Dahms, a young woman who graduated from Westbrook High School just last spring.

We’ve been following Dahms throughout her fight with leukemia, from her hospital bed to the finish line of the Boston Marathon, which Tim Walker, Westbrook director of student services, crossed in her honor. Walker plans to do so again this April, saying he will be running in memory of Brittany.

Even though she was terribly ill, Dahms worked to finish high school and graduate with her class last spring. As we head into the New Year, we could all take something from Dahms, who faced a deadly disease with courage, dignity and, remarkably, an occasional smile.
