Scarborough resident Bette Brunswick planned on moving her business The Dancing Damsel out of her basement and into a store after three years but it seems she’s a little ahead of schedule.

Brunswick opened her alteration, custom sewing, tailoring and fashion design shop at the Oak Hill Plaza on 20 Gorham Road on Dec. 5. In addition, Brunswick also performs home dA?©cor solutions such as sewing drapes, slipcovers and pillowcases, and will drive to people’s homes to perform her work.

Brunswick, along with her one part-time employee, Jane Smith of Scarborough, performs all of the work at the store using several industrial sewing machines along with machines typically used in a home.

While the space seems large for her business, Brunswick said she plans on expanding in the future to include some retail. She also is planning on offering sewing lessons.

“I’ve been doing this since I’ve been 10 years old for myself and for my dolls,” she said.

She continued occasionally sewing for family and friends while working as an engineer. Today she said she is taking her knowledge of both engineering and sewing and creating a career she loves.

The store is open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 510-6333.
